Robert Herjavec was a Croatian citizen who was born in SR Croatia on 14 September 1962.
At 8 years old, he came to Canada. To save money on bus fares, his father used to walk to get to work. Herjavec was raised in hard circumstances and with a small budget.
Herjavec graduated with a degree as an English Literature major from New College at the University of Toronto.
To earn a living, and to support his family, he worked minimum wage in a variety of jobs, including waiting tables, delivery of newspapers, and salesman for retail.
Career
Herjavec started his career in films, working behind the camera in various production roles.
He was an assistant director on numerous productions, including ‘The Return of Billy Jack’, which was filmed between 1985 and 1986. Herjavec ended his early film career with the title of Field Producer at the XIV Winter Olympic Games for Global TV.
Herjavec found out about an opening at Logquest Computer Startup, which used to sell IBM mainframe emulate boards. Herjavec wasn’t qualified for this job but offered to help for free for the first six months.
Herjavec decided to leave the company and start his own business, which he established under the name ‘BRAK Systems. The company was soon Canada’s largest provider of Internet Security Software. AT&T bought the company for $100 million in 2000.
Herjavec is also a popular television personality in “Dragons’ den” and “Shark Tank”, alongside entrepreneurs Daymond John, Barbara Corcoran and Lori Greiner.
He is also the author of two best-selling titles: ‘Driven’: How to succeed in business and life (2010) and The Will to win: Leading, Competing and Succeeding’ (2013).
