Daddy Yankee, also known as Ramon Luis Ayala Rodriguez, is one of the most prominent reggaeton musicians of all time. He has helped to bring this music into mainstream culture.
He is currently co-owner of El Cartel Records, which was his first record label. This was his start to a very successful musical career.
He is a hard worker and has released a lot record-breaking and award winning music since his debut.
Early Life
Daddy Yankee was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico on February 3, 1977 to a salsa percussionist dad and a manicurist mom. His family included other musicians. After watching his father perform, he discovered he was a music lover at a young age.
He began singing and rapping at the age of 13 and quickly became interested in reggaeton. He looked up to DJ Nelson, DJ Drako and DJ Playero.
Reggaeton was not so popular back then. However, some artists from San Juan used a mixture of hip-hop and freestyle rap to create their music.
He had always dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player as a teenager, but everything fell apart when he was struck by a bullet during a barrio gun fight.
Career
Daddy Yankee was able to concentrate on his career during his recovery from the gunshot.
At this point, DJ Playero gave him the chance to appear on his 1992 mixtape “Playero 37” and helped him release his 1995 solo mixtape “No Mercy”.
But, Puerto Rican politicians soon wanted to ban Daddy Yankee’s mixtape. Because it had lyrics that were scathing about the government. The mixtape was accepted by other locals, as it contained lyrics that could be reacted to.
His first album, El Cartel, was released in 1997. El Cartel II followed in 2001. Both of these albums did well in Puerto Rico but had very little or no impact on Latin America.
His album El Cangri.com, which spoke more about corruption, terrorism and religion, gained him more attention in 2002. This album gained him more recognition in the US. His single “Latigazo” was quickly being played on Spanish radio stations. It soon reached number 43 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums Charts.
He released another album, titled “Barrio Fino”, two years later. It contained one of his greatest hits, ‘Gasolina,’ which was ranked among the ’50 Greatest Latin Songs of All Time’.
Interscope Records signed him in 2005 and later released El Cartel: The Big Boss. It featured the talents of Will.I.Am and Scott Storch.
Yankee released another album, ‘Mundial’, in 2010. ‘Prestige’ came out a year later. He released a second album, ‘King Daddy’ in 2013, which was accompanied by his ‘King Daddy Tour’, which covered many European and American cities.
2017 saw the release of Daddy Yankee’s most iconic single, ‘Despacito.’ It also featured the talents Luis Fonsi. It quickly rose to the top of Billboard’s Hot 100 and was well received worldwide.
