Before Disney World first opened its gates to the public in October 1971, though, it’s safe to say that mosquitoes did hover around the site. However, Disney decided to build a resort in the insect-riddled Sunshine State after the success of Disneyland, which was unveiled in 1955 in Anaheim, California.

Market surveys from the 1950s had shown that only 5 per cent of visitors to the West Coast attraction travelled from beyond the Mississippi River. Disney was eager to tap into that huge potential market on the eastern side of the United States.
