With the Motorwagen getting a lot of attention, the German authorities met up with Karl Benz and they wanted to make sure that the use of the Motorwagen would be regulated. This was for legal and safety reasons.

Because of this, anyone who wanted to operate the Benz Patent Motorwagen on public roads must get an official license from the German government. The first official driver’s license was released on August 1, 1888, and the owner of this license was Karl Benz himself.
