Separated from his people

Sitting Bull eventually surrendered in 1881 when his family and followers were already suffering from starvation. Sitting Bull and his companions when he surrendered were taken to Fort Yates, a military post that was near the Standing Rock Agency. Sitting Bull and his warriors were separated from the other Hunkpapa people who have already surrendered earlier. The officials were concerned that seeing Sitting Bull would stir up trouble and rebellion. They eventually were transferred to Fort Randall, where the group was held as prisoners of war. All in all, there were 12 people in Sitting Bull’s immediate family and 159 people in the rest of his group.
