Central Bank of Iraq, 2003
The day before the United States barged in Baghdad as part of the 2003 invasion of Iraq, almost $1 billion was taken from the Central Bank of Iraq. In the same month, a handwritten note from Sadam Hussein surfaced. The note ordered that $920 million be taken from the bank and given to his son, Qusay Hussein.
According to reports, $100 bills were placed in boxes and loaded into trucks and trailers and lasted five hours. Up until 2011, this was considered one of the biggest bank heists in all of history. Some of the money was recovered, but much of it remains unaccounted for.
