Both the movies and the novel are considered a work of fiction but the creators in fact drew inspiration from a real-life mafia boss and the wild adventures of his life. Many of the characters were based on real people, some are even rather famous!

Remember the up-and-coming singer and actor Jonny Fontaine, the rumour is that he was in fact based on Frank Sinatra. This is all speculation but considering that Sinatra and the Jonny share so many similarities, that even Sinatra himself was reportedly extremely offended by the portrayal.
