The Most Bizarre And Eye-Opening Images From Mars

NASA once captured a mysterious crater with a hole leading to an underground cavern

Holes are hardly a foreign concept to people on Earth. Still, that doesn’t mean they can’t be unusual. One of the more bizarre images from Mars that we’ve seen is this shot from 2011 taken by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. It appears to show a dip in the ground with a hole leading to an underground chamber somewhere.

According to NASA, the hole is almost 115 feet wide, while the cavern inside is around 65 feet. When this photograph was taken, scientists couldn’t understand why the hole was surrounded by a circular crater. When it was uploaded by NASA almost a decade later, there was still uncertainty about this and other elements of the mysterious Martian hole.
