The first opal

On February 1, 1915, Willie Hutchinson discovered the first opal found in the area. Discovering that first piece of the jewel was a big day for the tiny community. They had no idea that their land had treasures.

During this time, the town had no official name yet. In 1916, just a year after the discovery, miners began to come to the area to try their luck. The town was established that year.
