Making their mark

Soon enough, the miners became colonizers of the land. Their first agenda was to give the land a name that they can pronounce. The original name was kupa piti, words from the Kokatha language that translated to “white man’s holes” or “boys waterhole.”

The miners settled on “Coober Pedy” which sounded like the aboriginal and original name of the area. And the area has been known as Coober Pedy since then. With an official name, a government could be established, which paved the way for resources like water and power to come to the area.
