9 Kim Kardashian: Kimono

Kim Kardashian was accused of cultural appropriation after she shared the first glimpse at Kimono’s shapewear. Kimono, which is the Japanese name for traditional Japanese clothing, was also revealed to be Kimono. Kim liked the name as it was a play upon her first name. I think it was totally innocent. But internet users around the world disagree with me.

There was immediate backlash after the initial Kimono trademark was filed. Twitter was abuzz with controversy and the hashtag #KimOhNo became a trending topic. Kim apologized, stating that she had “deep respect” for the Japanese kimono. She also admitted that she was ignorant about the topic and didn’t know that Kimono was Japanese. Kim eventually dropped the name and renamed her shapewear Skims.
