Barack Obama is the 44th president of the United States. He was born in Hawaii and was raised primarily by his mother. Obama is also a Harvard Law School grad and former university lecturer.

Early Life

Barack Obama was born on August 4, 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Obama spent one year of his childhood in Washington State. His parents had separated in 1964 and his father had relocated to Kenya.

In 1965, his mother remarried and they moved to Indonesia for four years. Obama returned to Honolulu in 1971 to live with his maternal grandparents. He attended Punahou School and graduated in 1979.

He reflects over the years on his management of social perceptions relating to his multi-cultural heritage.

After high school, his educational pursuits required some moving. He completed his sophomore and freshman years at Occidental College, Los Angeles by 1981.

It was then on to New York City, where he spent his junior and final year at Columbia University. He graduated in 1983. Obama entered Harvard Law School in 1988, where he graduated in 1991.

Career

Obama taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School for 12 years after completing his university degree. From 1992-1996, he was a lecturer and then a senior lecturer.

He also worked for the university while he was there. He joined Miner Barnhill and Galland, a large law firm that specialized in civil rights litigation. This included economic development.

Obama was elected Illinois state senator in 2005, winning 70% of the vote during the 2004 general election. He co-sponsored the Secure America Act and the Orderly Immigration Act as a senator. He began to step down in late 2006 and early 2007 as he prepared for his presidential campaign.

Barack Obama was elected 44th United States president in January 2009. He served two terms, until 2017. On his 100th day in office, Obama had already ordered the closure of Guantanamo Bay.

Obama’s first bill was the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009. This act changed the statute of limitations in equal-pay cases.

Obama supported and ensured the creation of additional statutes to protect LGBTQ rights during his presidency. He supported the legalization of same-sex marriage and included a crime prevention law.

His last day in the oval office saw 330 commutations of non-violent drug offenders as well as commutations to over 15 hundred other people, including Chelsea Manning.
